What You Can and Can’t Sell With PLR Rights (2026)

A PLR licence lets you edit the content, put your name on it, and sell the finished product. Almost every private label rights licence forbids four things: passing on the source files, selling the graphics on their own, claiming original copyright, and transferring the rights to anyone else. Everything beyond those four varies by vendor — and the variation is where people get their accounts closed.

This page explains the three licence types, what each one permits, which platforms accept PLR, and how to check a licence before you buy. It is based on the actual licence terms of five PLR products I have reviewed, not on a summary of what PLR “usually” means.

The three licence types

LicenceWhat you can doCan you pass it on?
PLR
Private Label Rights
Edit it, rebrand it, claim authorship of the edited version, sell the finished productNo — you cannot hand the rights to a buyer
MRR
Master Resell Rights
Everything PLR allows, plus you can sell the resell rights to your buyerYes — one level down
RR
Resell Rights
Sell the product as-is. No editing, no rebranding, no claiming authorshipDepends — usually not

The distinction that matters: PLR lets you change the product. RR does not. If you buy resell rights and rewrite the content, you have broken the licence.

What almost every PLR licence forbids

Across the five products I have reviewed, four restrictions appear every single time:

  1. You cannot pass on the source files. The DOCX, PSD, HTML or TXT files stay with you. Buyers get the finished PDF, not the editable original.
  2. You cannot sell the graphics on their own. The covers and banners are part of the product, not a separate asset you can liquidate.
  3. You cannot claim original copyright. You can put your name on your edited version; you cannot assert you wrote the underlying work.
  4. You cannot transfer the rights. Selling the product is allowed. Selling the licence is not, unless it is explicitly MRR.

Where the licences actually differ

This is the part nobody tells you, and it is the reason to read the licence every time rather than assuming.

Two products I reviewed this month take opposite positions on the same question — whether you may use the content as a free lead magnet:

ProductFree lead magnet?Source files?
The Bounceback BlueprintYesNever hand over
Are We There Yet PLRNo — explicitly bannedNever hand over
AI Brain TransplantYesNever hand over

Same licence family, opposite answer on the free-giveaway question. If you had assumed, you would have broken one of them. Read the licence for the specific product, every time.

Which platforms accept PLR

Amazon KDP

Amazon does not ban PLR outright, but it enforces against duplicate and low-quality content. If the same PLR ebook is published by forty people, expect takedowns. Amazon’s terms require you to hold the rights to what you publish, so a PLR licence that lets you claim authorship of your edited version is generally workable — a licence that forbids claiming authorship is not.

The practical test: if you cannot honestly say you own the rights to the version you upload, do not upload it. Accounts have been closed over this.

Etsy

Etsy permits PLR-based digital products, but the listing must be your own work in a meaningful sense — your edit, your cover, your branding. Etsy’s handmade and digital policies penalise identical resold files. Rebrand before you list.

Gumroad

Gumroad is the most permissive of the three. There is no handmade requirement, so PLR products sell there routinely. The licence you bought still governs what you may pass to your buyer.

Your own site

No platform policy applies. Only the licence does. This is where PLR is cleanest — and where the free-lead-magnet question actually bites, because a lead magnet is a giveaway, and some licences forbid exactly that.

How to check a licence before you buy

Six questions, answerable in about two minutes from the licence page:

  1. Is it PLR, MRR or RR? The three permit very different things.
  2. Are the source files included, and may you edit them? No DOCX means no rebrand.
  3. May you claim authorship of your edited version? If not, KDP is closed to you.
  4. May you give it away free? Some licences ban lead-magnet use outright.
  5. May you sell the finished product? Some licences are personal use only.
  6. Is there a refund? Many PLR launches state all sales final. Check before you pay.

The mistake that costs people their accounts

Buying PLR and treating “private label rights” as “I own this now”. You do not own it. You own a licence to use it within stated limits. The four restrictions above are near-universal, and the free-giveaway rule is not — which means the only safe approach is to read the specific licence and keep a copy of it.

Frequently asked

Can I sell PLR ebooks on Amazon?

Usually yes, if your licence permits you to claim authorship of your edited version and you have genuinely changed the content. Publishing the unedited file alongside everyone else who bought it is what gets accounts closed.

Can I sell PLR products on Etsy?

Yes, with rebranding. Etsy penalises identical resold files.

What is the difference between PLR and MRR?

PLR lets you edit and sell the product. MRR additionally lets you sell the resell rights to your buyer, so they can sell it too. MRR is strictly broader — and usually more expensive.

Is PLR legal?

Yes. It is a licensing arrangement, not a copyright transfer. You are buying permission to use someone else’s work under stated conditions.

Can I use PLR as a free lead magnet?

Sometimes. Some licences allow it explicitly; others ban it outright. This is the single most common assumption that turns out to be wrong — check the licence.
